Season Workshop

Saturday 20 & Sunday 21 July 2024

9:30am - 5:00pm | Griffith Regional Theatre

Griffith and Regional Association of Performing Arts (GRAPA), Western Riverina Arts and Griffith Regional Theatre invite actors, directors, drama teachers, and anyone interested in enhancing their performance skills, to work with RARE BIRD ensemble during their Riverina tour of LOVE & FORGETTING – Tales from a Young Mixer. Enrol early for what promises to be a rare training opportunity lead by the company’s internationally acclaimed artistic director, Jeremy James.

A big, nutritious meal for my artistic hunger. Donne Ngabo | actor | Perth

The objective of the workshop is to provide participants with techniques that enrich their expressive potential and enhance their ability to build character and tell stories with clarity and confidence. Drawing on the teachings and practices of Jacques Lecoq, Théâtre du Soleil and Complicite, the workshop explores fundamental principles of play which help performers and directors generate engaging new work. Games, structured improvisations and movement training will foster the complicity, listening, and collaborative skills required to propose, conceive and create effectively in any rehearsal or devising process.

Immensely enlightening, with a specificity and comprehensive understanding of what is needed for story. It has been invaluable.  – Lila McGuire | actor | Perth

Liberating! A totally creative experience which has broadened my understanding of theatremaking and filled me with ideas and new approaches to work. – Caroline Craig | actor | Sydney

Jeremy James is an actor, director and teacher, and has received public and critical acclaim for his work with renowned theatre companies and drama schools across five continents over the past 25 years, notably with Théâtre du Soleil in Paris for a decade, and in Australia with NIDA and WAAPA. His workshops, designed for actors, directors, choreographers, dancers and teachers at all stages, have been hosted by theatre companies, schools and training institutes in Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, France, Indonesia, The Netherlands, Philippines, Spain, United Kingdom and Uruguay. Across Australia, courses have been tailored for Back to Back, Barking Gecko, Critical Path, Encounter Theatre, Griffin Theatre, STRUT Dance, WAYTCo, among others.

Jeremy’s ability to create massive change in artists in a short period of time is what makes him one of the most stand out people to work with. Meredith Kalaman | choreographer & teacher | Vancouver

Jeremy’s on-the-floor approach is steeped in skills learned from decades of professional practice in an international devising context – his approach is distinct from other artists in our performing arts community. – Alexa Taylor | lecturer | WAAPA

RARE BIRD ensemble was founded in Boorloo/Perth by Jeremy and WAAPA graduate, Jack Martin, to offer new and immersive experiences that enrich the connections between the actor and audience. Combining musical, physical and traditional theatre practices, their site-specific work, LOVE & FORGETTING – Tales from a Young Mixer, premiered at the Sofitel Melbourne as part of its acclaimed Artists-in-Residence program, and is currently touring NSW, with shows in the Riverina this July presented by Griffith Regional Theatre, Australian Art Deco Festival Leeton and Wagga Wagga Civic Theatre.
